New year brings new operations

With the end of the year approaching, we would like to pass on some information about the upcoming holidays and the newest update on the merger of the Presque Isle Landfill with Tri-Community Landfill.

The new merged entity will be known as Aroostook Waste Solutions, which now has a website at www.aroostookwaste.com.  The website includes information on hours of operation, holidays, disposal fees and recycling.  The Presque Isle Landfill and Recycling Center will close at 12 noon on Dec. 24. Both facilities will be closed all day on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

There is some new information on the placement of igloos for drop-off recycling.  Igloos are planned to be located at Presque Isle City Hall, off Chapman Street near the courthouse, the Presque Isle Landfill, Mapleton Town Office and Washburn Town Office.  Some manufacturing issues have arisen that may delay the delivery and placement of the igloos before the end of this month. If igloos are not in place at the above locations by the end of December, you may take your recyclables to the Presque Isle Recycling Center or Presque Isle Landfill.  Both facilities will accept recyclables until the igloos are in place.

Every year we receive inquiries about whether Christmas wrapping paper is recyclable.  The answer is that wrapping paper is not recyclable and must be treated as trash. The mills that accept paper for recycling specifically forbid wrapping paper.

If you are wondering what to do with your natural tree after Christmas, there are several sites where you can drop off your tree at no cost.  These include the former Cunningham School lot, Presque Isle Landfill, Presque Isle Recycling Center (only until Dec. 31t), Gil’s Sanitation and Star City Sanitation.  Please remove all decorations from the tree and do not leave your tree in a plastic bag.

If you have any questions about recycling or landfill disposal, please contact the Solid Waste Division at 760-2712 or visit the City’s website at www.presqueislemaine.gov.
