100 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1918
Moved offices — Dr. Ebbett has located his offices on the third floor in the Mansur Block, and is pleasantly situated. Those desiring to see him should take the elevator in the Water Street entrance.
Recital — Master George and Miss Elizabeth Ebbett gave a recital at the Convent on Saturday evening, Dec. 14, 1918, which was enjoyed by those present. With the exception of the duets they used no notes. Miss Betty is 11 years old and George is 9. It was quite a remarkable recital considering the age of these young artists, and the high class of music so perfectly rendered, entirely from memory.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 23, 1943
Possible recreation building — Possibility of the erection here of a recreational building by the Federal Works Agency of the government was seen this week following posting of a warrant calling for a special town meeting Dec. 29 to act on an article permitting the Council to purchase land for a site. This action followed several weeks of negotiations between town authorities and St. Mary’s Church to permit purchase of slightly less than one acre of land on property west of, and adjoining, the church on which to erect the proposed building.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1968
Great turnout — Nearly 600 people attended the two performances of “Charlie Brown’s Christmas,” a Houlton Children’s Theatre presentation, at the Gentle Memorial Building. The production was under the direction of Robert N. Johnson of Portland, a freshman student at Ricker College. Mr. Johnson portrayed the character of Charlie Brown and other members of the cast were: Lucy, Margaret Rutledge; Snoopy, Teddy McGillicuddy; Linus, Peter Keyoski; Patty, Cathy Carton; Schroeder, Gordon Cantiello; and Sally, Mary Ellen Caldwell.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 22, 1993
Santa’s Salty Soup — Three performances of “Santa’s Salty Soup” were presented last Friday to parents, kindergarteners and first-graders by students in Laurine Wilson’s class at Houlton Elementary School. Cast members were: Amanda Polchies as Bing; Anthony Long, Dusty and Corey Sirois, Twinkles; Laurie Theriault, Winky; Denise Forster, Rudolph; Sarah Graham, Mrs. Claus; Jenna Tucker, Buzz; Cote Boulier, Jingles; and Christopher Hiscoe, Santa.
Toys for Tots — U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Maurais and Staff Sgt. Garland dropped off toys for local children as part of the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. There with them was Lt. Brian Chamberlain of the Salvation Army.
