101 Years Ago – Jan. 3, 1918
Apportionments — C. F. West, treasurer of the Star-Herald Pub. Co., had been appointed by Leonard A. Pierce, County Director War Savings Committee, Chairman of the War Savings Committee for the ensuing year for Presque Isle. This had to do with the sale of war Savings Stamps, the apportionment of which, uniform throughout the country, amounts to $20 for 1918 for each man, woman and child. The largest amount any single individual could take was $1,000, so that if Aroostook were to take up its apportionments, a strong effort should have been made to interest each and every household.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 6, 1944
Minister speaks — Rev. Nelson Canfield, Fort Fairfield Rotarian, was the principal speaker at the Rotary Club luncheon, his subject being public information. He was introduced by Rev. Tom Cornish, the program chairman. New members admitted to the club were Arthur L. Reynolds, whose classification was automobiles, and Stewart Donahue, whos show classification was baking industry. Guests present were Sam Antworth and Woodbury Brackett, both members of the Houlton Rotary Club.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 1, 1969
Promotions at MPG — Two staff promotions and the hiring of a credit manager was announced at Maine Potato Growers Inc., by Charles H. Guiney, general manager. Stephen Fields, 41, moved up as manager of the Farm Machinery Department after completing 13 years of service and becoming thoroughly familiar with the activities of the department. Richard Irving, 33, had completed four years of service as salesman and assistant manager of the Farm Supply Division, and moved up as manager of the department, including petroleum and feed operations. Reginald S. Ireland, 35, joined the man MPG office staff as credit manager. He was employed in the MPG Egg Marketing Department from 1954 to 1959, terminating his position at that time to enter the credit field.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 5, 1994
New Year’s bundle — Lisa and Tracy Carlson of Loring AFB had to wait a whole day into the new year to see their New Year’s gift: their daughter, Emma Yvonne Carlson. Emma was born Jan. 2, 1994, at 7:10 a.m., the first baby to be born in 1994 at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. Weighing 7 pounds, 5 ounces, she was delivered by Dr. Arlene Cenedella.
Season of giving — A group of volunteers at The Aroostook Medical Center gave of their time and energy to make Christmas a little brighter for needy children in central Aroostook. Gifts were donated by TAMC employees and volunteers from Community General Hospital in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill and Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle. The gifts were presented to the Mars Hill Community Club and to Presque Isle Kiwanis Club during an employee function at Gould Memorial.
Generator — Walter Morrison, Exalted Ruler of the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954, announced that the lodge donated a generator to Visiting Nurses of Aroostook (VNA) to be used for that agency’s rural clients who have no electricity. This action was generated by a request from Ralph McPherson, VNA social worker, and Wanda Carmichael, VMA registered nurse, who were advocating on behalf of a VNA client whose old generator had stopped working.
