MARS HILL, Maine — Middle school cheering squads from four communities will compete for bragging rights in the region when they gather at Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School for the Aroostook League Championships.

The competition that starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, will feature Caribou, Houlton, Presque Isle and host Central Aroostook.

According to Sami Allen, who coaches the varsity team at Central Aroostook and is one of the event organizers, routines must consist of a cheer, tumbling, jumps, stunting, dance and a pyramid section.

Judges will select all-star tumblers, jumpers and a stunt team at the end of the competition.

Awards will be given to the Aroostook League champion and the runner-up, while teams with the best jumps, tumbling, stunts, dance and motion technique also will earn recognition.

“This is a great way for the kids to compete in front of a big audience before going on to the high school team,” Allen said.
