CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service office in Caribou issued an advisory for heavy snow the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Forecasters said an area of heavy snow will affect northwestern Washington, northeastern Piscataquis, eastern Aroostook and northeastern Penobscot counties. at 1:32 p.m. the heavy snow extended from near Baxter State Park to near Houlton. The band is expected to continue to lift slowly northward across portions of northeast Maine through late afternoon.
Locations impacted include Presque Isle, Caribou, Houlton, Millinocket, Madawaska, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Van Buren, Patten, Danforth, Vanceboro, Mount Katahdin, Ripogenus, Portage, Mapleton, East Millinocket, Washburn, Mars Hill, Medway and Hodgdon. This includes the following highways: Interstate 95 between mile markers 244 and 304; U.S. Route between Eaton and Madawaska; and state highway 11 between Norcross and Portage.
Visibilities will drop quickly to less than a half mile in this area of heavy snow, weather personnel said. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are occurring in the affected area and roads are expected to become snow covered and slippery.
