Snowbunny or not, winter fun abounds

There is no denying it, winter is definitely here. In addition to cold temps and lots of snow, there is less sunlight and a higher incidence of the winter blues.  Here are a few things you can do to combat those seasonal blues.

Embrace Maine winter. Get outside and go ice fishing, ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tubing and cross country or downhill skiing.

If you’ve never done these things before and are not sure you’ll like them, go to Winter Fun Day at the Aroostook State Park. On Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., visit the park at 87 State Park Road in Presque Isle.  Admission is only $1.50 for ages 12-64; all others are admitted free. There will be cross-country skiing, sliding, snowshoeing, tote sled rides and guided nature walks. Skis and snowshoes will be available for use at no charge.  A hot dog lunch, coffee and cocoa will be provided.

Lighten up. Brighten up your day by wearing brightly colored clothing.

Try the library. Go to the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library.  It is SO much more than books. The library has movies and albums, an art gallery and regularly scheduled events.  The library is centrally located at 39 Second Street, just one short block off of Main Street. Its hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Try something new. Contact Sherry Locke at the United Way of Aroostook at 764-5197 for volunteer opportunities around the community.  Volunteering is fun, fulfilling, connects you with others, and is good for your mind and body.

Channel your inner artist.  Take a class at Wintergreen Arts.  Don’t forget about the First Friday Art Walk, a free event held on the first Friday evening of every month.

It doesn’t have to be snow. Not a snow bunny?  Go for a walk on the indoor track at the Sargent Family Community Center, and while you are there, check out some of the activities.  The Community Center is located at the intersection of Chapman Street and Riverside Drive.

Stay vibrant. Keep your mind active by learning new things with Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE) with a wide variety of classes and field trips.  There is something for everyone with a curious mind. For more information, contact Penny Kern at penny.kern.pk@gmail.com.
