LIMESTONE, Maine — Limestone, which is set to leave RSU 39 on July 1, has officially elected three members to its own school board.
Residents elected Kathie Beaulieu, who led a withdrawal committee leading up to Limestone’s departure of RSU 39, to three year term with 80 votes. Joey Smith was elected for a two year term with 81 votes, and Shaun Guerrette was elected for a one year term with 41 votes.
New board members were sworn in on Friday, Jan. 18.
Residents last year showed overwhelming support for leaving the RSU 39 that will continue to serve Caribou and Stockholm. On Nov. 6, 2018, 445 residents voted in favor of leaving with 198 showing support for remaining part of the school unit.
Roughly one month later, the town office was packed for a school committee meeting during which Beaulieu and many others volunteered to serve on ten committees to work on the transition and plans for operation of the town’s school. The strictly advisory committees are dealing with governance, finance, administration policies and procedures, operations, contracted services, staffing and educational programming, and naming and renaming activities.
The school board will have final say and authority to make changes to education within the town.
