Fort Fairfield moving ahead with community center power project, revaluation

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The town of Fort Fairfield is pursuing an upgrade to the electrical system at its community center, seeking bids for its tax revaluation, and supporting a new cafe one woman wants to open.

At Fort Fairfield’s Jan. 16 meeting, the town council approved an upgrade to the community center’s electrical system from 400 amps to 600 amps for $10,000.

The councilors approved the upgrade after discussions around the need for additional electrical capacity in the future and use of a generator should the community center need to be used as an emergency shelter.

The councilors also voted to authorize a request for proposals to conduct a property revaluation.

“It has been 22 years since the town’s last revaluation,” said town manager Andrea Powers. It will be another two years before the new rates are implemented, she said.

The councilors also voted to issue their support for a micro-enterprise grant that Meg Hegemann is seeking to open a new small business, the Red Door Cafe.

Hegemann is currently the director of the Maine Potato Blossom Festival and told the council that she will be transitioning out of that role this spring as she works to launch the cafe.

Micro-enterprise grants are part of the Community Development Block Grant Program and offer financial support to new and small businesses.
