CARIBOU, Maine — The junior varsity girls’ basketball team at Caribou High School lost to Mount Desert Island Friday before bouncing back to defeat Ellsworth Saturday in games played at CHS.
The squad takes an 8-8 record into its final three games. The Vikings play Fort Fairfield at home Jan. 29, before taking on John Bapst at the University of Maine at Orono Feb. 2 and Presque Isle at home Feb. 6.
Caribou cut a 21-point halftime deficit down to seven before MDI prevailed 55-39 on Friday. Coach Marc Weeks said the team was frustrated with their effort in the first half and set a goal to stage a comeback.
“I was extremely happy with the girls’ second-half effort,” Weeks said. “They played confident, hard and together and while we lost the game, we proved to ourselves that we could compete with them after a disappointing start.”
Sage Dubay scored 10 points and Maddy Zeigler scored eight and hauled in 12 rebounds to lead the Vikings.
The following morning, Caribou held Ellsworth scoreless in the first half and went on to a 41-25 triumph. Gabbie Sutherland tallied 13 points and Zeigler had 11 rebounds to go along with her six points.
