101 Years Ago – February 7, 1918
Basketball game — Presque Isle won in a game with Patten Academy, acknowledged to be a fast basketball team, in Perry Theatre. The first league game won by the Presque Isle High School team was taken at Caribou High School 40-22. Caribou High girls’ team won from ASNS between halves. Our boys had started in well the season. Special cars over the AVR carried a large crowd to Caribou. Our boys had good support if they were away from home.
75 Years Ago – February 10, 1944
Insurance sales — Lawrence W. Sawyer of Portland, general agent of New England Mutual Insurance Company for Maine, announced that Lloyd S. Greenlaw, local agent for the company, established a new record for individual sales for the Agency in Maine the previous year. Mr. Greenlaw, not only led the Company’s field representatives in the state, Sawyer said, but his work was highly instrumental in obtaining runner-up position for the President’s Plaque, awarded annually to the agency scoring most notable achievement.
Carnival– The Foxy Owls club held its regular meeting February 1. It was voted to hold a winter carnival some time during the month of February. A committee was appointed to choose the candidates for King and Queen. The committee met February 3 and appointed three candidates for king: Charles Shaw, Malen Walker and Stewart Doody. The three candidates for queen were: Loretta Thompson, Jean Wilder and Joyce Smith. The king and queen were chosen by the number of defense stamps bought by the pupils of the seventh and eighth grades.
50 Years Ago – February 5, 1969
Scout leader — Maj. Gen. Clair Thurston of Thorndike was elected president of the Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America at its 48th annual meeting held at the Oronoka Restaurant, Orono. The annual business meeting of the Council was well attended and Scouters gathered from every corner of the large Council area. Elected to serve with General Thurston were the following vice presidents: Philip Annis, Dover-Foxcroft; Edward Chase, Ashland; Ralph Leonard, Old Town; and John Sinclair, Bangor. Honorary vice-presidents elected were: Dr. Malcolm Harris, Presque Isle; Lawrence Libby, Bangor; and John T. Maines of Holden. Assistant treasurer: Edward M. Graham Jr. of Bangor. William C. Allen of Ellsworth Falls was re-elected as Council commissioner; and Earl G. Reed of Brewer as secretary.
25 Years Ago – February 9, 1994
Karate winners — Local students from Graves Institute of Self Defense won a number of trophies at Tracy’s annual fall tournament held in Ellsworth. Competition was held in point sparring, Jiu-Jitsu, Form Kata and power impactor. Several students from the Presque Isle class were multiple trophy winners. Suzette Perry was a three-time winner by claiming first in the impactor division, a second in fighting and a third in throwing and falling. Katie Flavin took a first in Jiu-Jitsu, with her brother Ben as a partner, and also was second in sparring, Ralph Dwyer won his impactor division and fought his way to a second place in the senior green belt point sparring classification. Aubrey Bryant also won the impactor division for white belts and garnered a third place in novice fighting.
Caron hit 1,000th point — Ashland Community High School senior Ryan Caron scored the 1,000th point of his career during the last game’s 79-57 triumph over Southern Aroostook in a game played at Ashland. Caron was given a plaque and game ball by coach Pete Belskis and Athletic Director Ron Grover.
