CARIBOU, Maine — The Nylander Museum of Natural History in Caribou has a busy February ahead, with several events planned including “Dino Days,” an educational dinosaur event geared toward a younger audience, as well as a visit from Chewonki, a traveling natural history program based in Maine.
Dino Days will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 16 to 24. According to Gail Hagelstein of the Nylander Museum board, the event will feature several dinosaur-themed events, including a “dinosaur dig,” in which participants can chip away at plaster encasing a plastic dinosaur; the creation of dinosaur cookie-cutter ornaments; dinosaur books, matching games, and even dinosaur selfies.
Chewonki personnel will visit the museum on Friday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m., and will engage the audience in a presentation on predators in the animal kingdom. Their presentation is roughly one hour long and geared for third-graders up to adults.
Participants will have the opportunity to see three live, non-releasable predators, study mounted animals, and learn about the myths and reputation of predatory animals.
A commercial for the museum, shot by Brenda Jepson of Crown of Maine Productions, will be aired on MPBN on Feb. 14 and 16 during the airing of a documentary entitled “Old Maine Swedish Farms.” The commercial itself is currently available for viewing online, with the link provided on the Nylander Museum’s official Facebook page.
The museum kicked off this month’s features Feb. 1, when local photographer Rosalie K. Dwyer lent and installed eight of her scenic photos depicting the untouched wilderness and wildlife of Aroostook County.
