CARIBOU, Maine — The first leg of the Aroostook League classical-style Nordic championships saw Fort Kent’s Miguel Sanclemente and Madawaska’s Isabelle Jandreau continue their winning ways.
Sanclemente took first place in the boys’ race by edging Madawaska’s Justin Pelletier by 1.6 seconds. Sanclemente recorded a time of 16 minutes and 41.9 second on the five-kilometer course, while Pelletier finished in 16:43.5.
Jandreau had a much easier time in the girls’ race as her margin of victory was 1:21.8 over runner-up Dolcie Tanguay of MSSM.

Malachai Willey of Caribou (16:54.8), Harrison Walters of MSSM (16:58.4) and Matt Cyr of Madawaska (17:00.6) completed the boys’ top five, while Kassandra Nelson of Ashland (19:42.6), Willow Hall of Ashland (20:18.8) and Nancy Martin of Fort Kent (20:58.3) were the third, fourth and fifth place girls’ finishers.
Madawaska edged Caribou in World Cup scoring, 780-778, to claim the boys’ team title. Fort Kent (750), MSSM (729), Ashland (727) and Presque Isle (685) followed.
Fort Kent’s 768 points were tops on the girls’ side. Madawaska came in second with 757. Caribou (755), MSSM (735), Presque Isle (714) and Ashland (589) were the other competing teams.
The second leg is set for Thursday at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center. The league’s freestyle championships begin at 2:30 p.m.
