PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Senior forward Jake Stevens on Monday became the 11th Wildcat hockey player to reach the 100-point mark for a career, helping his team to a 6-2 home victory over Brewer in the final regular season match for both squads.
Stevens assisted on a third-period power play goal by linemate Thomas Patenaude to reach the milestone. Stevens went into the game three points shy of the mark. He assisted on another Patenaude goal in the first period and also picked up the assist on defenseman Torey Levesque’s goal, which came on a power play earliy in the final period.
He became the first PI player in five years to score 100 points, which are a combination of goals and assists. Tyler Seeley and Alex Michaud both hit the mark in 2014. Others on the prestigious list are Doug Carlisle, Darren Carlisle, Brandon Daigle, Dylan Collins, Brennen Shaw, Isaac Lajoie, Connor Shaw and Adam Flynn.
“Jake has been a standout offensive threat since his freshman year,” said his coach, Carl Flynn. “He and the coaching staff haven’t always seen eye to eye, but it is that fiery aggressive edge that he brings to the rink that makes him so competitive.
“As a senior, he has matured, has become a very good teammate and is trying to make those around him better hockey players,” Flynn added.
As for Monday’s game, which was Senior Day, the Wildcats opened a 3-0 lead on goals by Colby Carlisle, Patenaude and Connor DeMerchant. Gage LeTourneau assisted on Carlisle’s goal.
The Witches scored late in the first period and added another in the second before PI put three more on the scoreboard in the final period. Following the power play goals by Levesque and Patenaude, Carlisle provided an empty-netter off assists by DeMerchant and LeTourneau.
Presque Isle outshot Brewer in the contest 33-25. Wildcat goaltender Andre Daigle recorded 23 saves in the victory.
“It was not a pretty game as it was sloppy and physical, but we found a way to fight through and get the win,” Flynn said. “That’s the type of hockey we’re going to need to play in the playoffs in order to be successful and meet our ultimate goal.”
Presque Isle finished the regular season 15-3, the best record in Class B North, and is currently in second place in the Heal Point standings. The final rankings will be released later in the week. The quarterfinal round is on Tuesday, Feb. 26, on the higher seed’s home ice and the semifinals will be played Saturday, March 2, at Colby College in Waterville.
