PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Annual Himie Towle Memorial Winter Frolic will take place on Saturday, March 2, at the Nordic Heritage Center.
The Winter Frolic includes a cross country ski event for all ages, with first- and second-place awards presented in 22 ski categories. Aroostook Cup points will be awarded to all ski entrants 12 years and older competing in the 10K race or the 5K tour. Aroostook Cup contenders will vie again to win an Amish rocking chair. This mass start event is Freestyle Cross Country.
In addition to the ski competition, there will be opportunities for some youth and family “frolicking.” Trails will be open for those who want to snowshoe or cross country ski non-competitively. Ski and snowshoe equipment is available for those who need it. Fat-biking enthusiasts are also welcome.
“We offer this event each year in memory of our dad, who was such an outdoor enthusiast. When we were kids, he would always bring us and our friends out for adventures in the snow,” said Steve Towle of Easton.
“Our family grew up with a love of the outdoors, particularly during winter, and what better way to share his legacy than to offer an event like this for the community,” he said.
Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle is lead sponsor.
“Events like this are just what we want to be supporting,” said Jamie Guerrette, community health specialist at the hospital. “We are committed to promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles in our region. That’s why we commit time and resources to our Fit & Fun program, hosting our own activities as well as collaborating with others, such as the Towles and Nordic Heritage, who are already putting on great events.”
Registration for the Himie Towle Memorial Frolic will take place the day of the event from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the center, with activities beginning at noon. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youth, and $20 for families. Registration includes lunch and Frolic freebies for participants.
