AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Transportation has issued its three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, to include more than $2.44 billion worth of construction and maintenance.
According to the MDOT, the plan includes more than 1,900 work items and estimates the department will invest in 199 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,142 miles of pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 203 spot and safety improvements; and 203 bridge projects.
The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some Aroostook County communities in 2019.
Aviation
Safety and infrastructure improvements at Northern Aroostook Regional Airport may include design and permitting for runway safety area improvements, apron recon and parallel taxiway construction to include precision approach path indicator (PAPI) and runway end identifier lights (REIL’s).
Safety and infrastructure improvements at Caribou Municipal Airport may include an environmental assessment.
Bridge Rehabilitation
Work includes 19 bridges along the Maine Northern Railway, including bridges in Ashland, Eagle Lake, Fort Kent, Frenchville, Masardis and Wallagrass.
Workers plan to repair bridge joints and clean and paint bearings and beam ends on Nadeau Bridge over Fish River, located 0.03 miles south of Red River Road in Eagle Lake.
Bridge Replacement
Work will include Otter Brook Bridge over Otter Brook in Caribou, located 0.37 miles north of Watson Memorial Drive.
The department will work on Perley Brook Bridge over Perley Brook, located 0.08 of a mile north of South Perley Brook Road in Fort Kent.
Culvert Replacement
Culvert projects include:
Replacing catch basins on Route 164 in Caribou, located 0.02 of a mile east of the Meadow Brook Road.
Replacing a culvert on Route 227 in Castle Hill, located 8.03 miles east of the intersection of Cottage Hill Road and Route 227 in Ashland.
Replacing a culvert on Sly Brook Road, located 5.18 miles south of Soldier Pond Road in Eagle Lake.
Replacing a culvert in Hamlin, located 0.32 of a mile south of the intersection of Route 1.
Work on a cross culvert located 1.46 miles northeast of Shore Road in Sinclair Twp.
Replacing culverts located 0.55 of a mile west of the Hale Road in Mapleton.
Replacing two culverts located 1.25 miles north of the T8 R5 WELS-T9 R5 WELS town line and located 0.80 of a mile north of the Ashland-Nashville Plt. town line.
Replacing three culverts in New Sweden on the Westmanland Road, Station Road and Capitol Hill Road.
Replacing a culvert located 1.20 miles south of the Gilbert Road in Saint Agatha.
Replacing two culverts, beginning 1.00 mile east of Main Street and extending east 0.50 of a mile in Stockholm.
Replacing a culvert on Sly Brook Road in Wallagrass, located 0.64 of a mile southwest of the New Canada town line. Replacing a culvert located 2.20 miles south of Castle Hill Road in Washburn.
Replacing two culverts beginning at the intersection of Route 1 and extending east 1.75 miles in Connor Twp.
Custodial Maintenance
Custodial tasks will include clearing the right of way beginning 1.20 miles south of the intersection of the Gilbert Road and extending southeast 10.50 miles to Route 161 in Saint Agatha.
Ditching/Cleaning Culverts
Culvert plans include the following.
Ditching in various locations on Route 11 in Ashland, Nashville Plt. and Portage Lake, stretching from Station Street in Ashland to West Road in Portage Lake.
Ditching and cleaning culverts on Route 11 beginning 0.53 of a mile north of the Ashland-Masardis town line and extending south to the Masardis-T9 R5 WELS town line.
Ditching in various locations along Route 205 in Caribou beginning at the Presque isle-Caribou town line and extending north 2.96 miles to the Hardison Road.
Ditching in various locations, beginning at Route 89 in Caribou and extending east 6.44 miles to Route 1A.
Ditching beginning at the intersection of Watson Memorial Drive in Caribou and extending north to Plante Road, then beginning at Adams Road and extending north to the intersection of Dubay Pit Road.
Ditching various locations and cleaning culverts, work beginning at Bridge Street and extending south 0.45 of mile to Paradis Circle in Fort Kent.
Ditching from the intersection of Route 11 and extending east 0.75 of a mile on the Soldier Pond Road in Wallagrass
Drainage Improvements/Maintenance
Planned drainage work includes these projects.
Work on Route 89 in Caribou beginning 0.04 of a mile east of Main Street and extending east 0.29 of a mile to Bennett Drive.
Municipal Partnership Initiative Program, beginning 0.01 of a mile north of Stoddard Street and extending north 0.15 of a mile in Washburn.
Guardrail Installation/Replacement
MDOT plans cable guardrail replacement in Allagash.
Highway Paving/Rehabilitation
Plans for highway paving are as follows.
Work on Route 89 in Caribou beginning 0.01 of a mile north of Main Street and extending east 0.40 of a mile.
Work beginning 0.69 of a mile north of Washburn Road in Presque Isle and extending north 9.48 miles to Caribou.
Work beginning 0.40 of a mile west of Church Avenue in Frenchville and extending west 4.66 miles to Fort Kent.
Work beginning at Madawaska town line and extending north 5.74 miles to 0.15 of a mile east of St. Agatha Avenue in Frenchville.
Work beginning 0.02 of a mile south of Monroe Street and extending north 2.74 miles in Van Buren.
Work beginning 0.18 of a mile north of Parent Road in Van Buren and extending north 1.91 miles.
Repairing road surface approach on Nadeau Bridge over Fish River, located 0.03 of a mile south of Red River Road in Eagle Lake.
Large Culvert Improvements

Crews will perform light capital paving as follows.
Work beginning at Route 89 in Caribou and extending east 6.44 miles to Route 1A in Limestone.
Work beginning at Route 164 in Presque Isle and extending north 3.60 miles to Caribou.
Work beginning at Route 163 and extending north 3.48 miles to State Road in Mapleton.
Work beginning at Route 163 in Mapleton and extending north 3.65 miles to Presque Isle.
Rail Crossing Improvements
Rail crossing improvement work is planned at a crossing located 0.10 of a mile north of the Van Buren town line.
Slope Stabilization/Protection
The MDOT plan includes slope projects as follows.
Work on Grimes Road in Caribou beginning 0.81 of a mile northwest of the Fort Fairfield town line and extending north 0.09 of a mile.
Slope located 2.16 miles north of Deboullie Mountain Road and extending north 0.03 of a mile in Saint Agatha.
Work on Route 161 located 0.57 of a mile east of Mill Road in Saint John Plt.
Ultra-Thin Bonded Wearing Course
In this last category, the MDOT plans work in these locations.
Beginning 0.83 of a mile north of Route 89 in Caribou and extending north 9.31 miles to Connor Township.
Beginning 3.88 miles north of the Caribou city line and extending north 10.97 miles to Route 1A in Van Buren.
Beginning 0.04 of a mile south of the Van Buren-Grand Isle town line and extending north 3.72 miles.
