EASTON, Maine — Alexander Hale, son of Heather and Jeremy Hale of Easton and a seventh-grader at Easton Junior/Senior High School, is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2019 Maine National Geographic State Bee.
The contest will be held at the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday, March 29.
This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition. School bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.
The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state bees.
The state champion will advance to the National Geographic GeoBee Championship May 19-22 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. This year, the national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.
Second- and third-place winners receive a $10,000 and $5,000 college scholarship, respectively, and a $1,000 cash prize.
