BANGOR, Maine — The Region Two School of Applied Technology in Houlton was well represented at the 2019 SkillsUSA Maine State Championships, held in Bangor on March 7-8, with events at the United Technologies Center, Eastern Maine Community College, and the Cross Insurance Center.

Students enrolled in various Career and Technical Education programs at Region Two competed in leadership and skilled trade contests including: Commercial Baking, Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Electrical Wiring, Employability Knowledge, Medical Terminology, Nurse Assisting, Welding, and Welding Sculpture.

SkillsUSA is an organization that celebrates the skills students learn by participating in career and technical education programs during their high school and post-secondary years.

SkillsUSA’s aim is to enhance the future workforce by challenging students to excel in their chosen occupation while demonstrating professionalism, leadership, and employability skills — crucial skills current employers consistently report are increasingly hard to find.

Kyle Carver, a student in the welding program, earned a gold medal in Employability Knowledge, while Steven Rackliffe, who has attended both the automotive service and law enforcement programs earned silver in Employability Knowledge.

Additionally students Matthew Chase, Jonus Joslyn and Jacob Ouellette, all students in the law enforcement program, earned bronze medals in the Crime Scene Investigation contest.
