LIMESTONE, Maine — Limestone officials on April 3 formally recognized several residents who came together during a brutal storm in late February that caused numerous vehicles to drift off the road, closed schools and businesses, and shut down roads.
During the Select Board meeting, Town Manager Elizabeth Dickerson introduced a few individuals for a photograph, and later indicated that those present were only a “small representation of all the people who helped.”
The group included Jeff Roy and his son Justin Roy, who worked on the Cote Road; Steve Thibodeau, who ran a backhoe and dug out roads; and Highway Department Foreman Jim Pelletier.
Dickerson said other highway department staffers — Justin Evens, Chad Peers, and Travis Peers — also deserve recognition, along with Bob Edgecomb and William Thibodeau, who respectively helped fix machines and equipment at the public works department and volunteered their time plowing roads.
“We had community members Ricky, Steve, and Paul Beaulieu, Brian Edgecomb, and Randy Leavitt on the roads helping,” she said, adding that Paul Page and the snowmobile club also transported stranded motorists to safety during the storm.
She said Angela Poitras made meals at the fire station while Fire Chief Jon Poitras and the firefighters were out on the roads helping motorists. Police Chief Stacey Mahan and all his officers were also out on the roads, and that Sgt. Joey Smith was assisting out on the Cote Road rescuing stranded motorists.”
In the town office, Dickerson ran communications and incident coordination while Assistant Clerk Wendy Bencicenga made soup and worked with town clerk, treasurer, and tax collector Vicki Page to organize a lunch for town officials and volunteers who ventured out onto the treacherous roads.
Dickerson added that there were still others she did not name who helped during the February storm.
During the meeting, Selectman Walt Elliott and board Chairman Tom Albert thanked everyone who volunteered their time to make sure residents were safe during the storm.
“You guys did an excellent job,” said Albert. “Thank you.”
