The cemetery located on Main Street in Mapleton recently received a much-needed update thanks to the joint effort of Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 and the staff at the Town Office.
STANDING AROUND the new flagpole at the Main Street cemetery in Mapleton are members of Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133. The girls participated in a community service project this past May, placing American flags at the graves of local veterans. The town normally makes a donation to the veterans that traditionally place the flags, but due to health reasons, they were unable to complete the task this year. After receiving a check in the mail, the girls, along with their leaders, decided to return the funds to the three towns so purchases could be made to repair or replace aging fixtures at the cemeteries. Town officials decided to purchase a new flagpole with a solar light and a new flag for the Main Street cemetery. Pictured are, from left: Alexus LaFerriere, Alexis Getchell, Delaney Alward, Madelyn Buzza, Town Manager Jon Frederick, veteran Terry LaPointe of Mapleton, Amanda Winslow, Bethany Baker and Katelyn Amero. Absent when the photo was taken were troop members Sydney Robichaud and Rebecca Rider. The troop is led by Jennifer Buzza, Nancy Winslow and Laurie Amero.
This past May, the Girl Scouts participated in a community service project placing American flags at the graves of our fallen veterans. The towns of Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill normally make a donation to local veterans who, in the past, have donated their time placing the flags themselves. However, this year too many of those veterans were unable to help due to health issues. After being approached by the Town Office, Girl Scout Troop 1133 — along with parents and grandparents — spent one Saturday morning placing the flags in the four cemeteries in the community.
The Troop was surprised to receive a check in the mail from the town for their time and efforts. After some discussion, the girls and their leaders decided to return the check to the town so officials could purchase some needed updates for the cemeteries. Town officials decided to purchase a new flagpole, complete with a solar light and new flag to replace the rusted, crooked pole and tattered flag at the Main Street cemetery.
Town Manager Jon Frederick installed the pole himself and invited the girls to see the results of their hard work this past Friday. The girls also had the opportunity to meet local veteran Terry LaPointe from Mapleton, one of the veterans who has placed the flags at the graves in years past. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the girls for taking the time to help out, where he and his fellow veterans were unable to this year.
