    CARIBOU — Despite a record high of 89 degrees, a large group of cyclists gathered in Caribou Aug. 26 to engage in a unique bike event, the Caribou Cycle Classic.

    The event, staged at Caribou High School, was made up of a 25-mile road bike race through the long windy roads of Woodland and Perham along with a 10-mile road bike tour through a less challenging course through Woodland and back to Caribou

 

    Following the road bike events and a quick lunch, there were two mountain bike events, including a 5K and 10K through the CHS ski trails.

    In the 25-mile road race, three strong competitors covered the hills through Perham and raced full bore to the finish and when the dust settled, hundredths of seconds separated their times. Tony Giguerre of Winslow captured the title with a 1:07.11, followed by Martin Pelletier of Edmunston, New Brunswick at 1:07.12 and Shawn Berry of Caribou at 1:07.16.

    In the women’s division, Patricia Hebert of Edmunston captured first place with a time of 1:22.16.

    About an hour after the competitors completed the road bike racing, and with temperatures soaring, a strong field of competitors lined up to engage in either the 5K or 10K mountain bike race with the combined championship on the line for some competitors. In the end, Hebert and Pelletier captured the combined crown.

    Divisional race winners in 25-mile road race were: 13-15 male, first, Noah Rossignol, Mapleton; 16-19 male,  first, Caleb Chapman, Caribou; and second, Tyler Strid, Caribou; 16-19 female, first, Emily Soderberg, Caribou; 20-29 male, first, Pelletier; second, Brian Powers, Caribou; 30-39 male, first, Giguere; second, Berry; 30-39 female, first, Patsy Morin, Fort Kent; 40-49 male, first, Gregg Collins, Caribou; second, Marco Levesque, Edmunston; 40-49 female, first, Sandra Caron, Fort Kent; and second, Sherry Dubis, Fort Kent; 50-59 male, first, Von Perry, Easton; second, Gildor Theriault, Grand Falls; 50-59 female, first, Hebert; 60-69 male, first, Brent Jepson, Woodland; second, Paul Cyr, Fort Kent.

    In the 10K mountain bike race, winners were: 13-15 male, first, Riley McDuffie, Caribou; 20-29 male, first, Pelletier; and second, Jared Dickinson, Presque Isle; 30-39 male, first, Justin Perry, Presque Isle; second, Giguere; 30-39 female, Morin; 40-49 male, first Levesque; second, Collins; 50-59 male, Perry; 50-59 female, first, Hebert; 60-69 male, first, Jepson.

    In the 5K mountain bike race, division winners included: 13-15 male, first, Gabe Massey, Caribou; second, Nicholas Martin, Edmunston; 16-19 male, first, Tyler Strid; second, Kevin Strid, Caribou; 30-39 male, first, Travis Prashaw, Woodland; second, Daniel Martin, Edmunston.
