New treatment group for those on probation

CARIBOU, Maine — The Roads to Recovery Community Center recently began a new treatment group specifically for those on probation, recently released or have a criminal background, and are in recovery or attempting recovery from addictions.

Meetings began April 16 and take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Facilitated by a peer who is on federal probation and currently has over a year of successful recovery, the group works from the workbook “Criminal & Addictive Thinking.” Sessions aim to provide support about living daily life on probation, such as stigmas, trouble finding employment and the threat of jail always around the corner.

Organizers said topics will include how to live on probation and follow through with it successfully, probation with children and the struggles that come with that, and changing the formerly criminal mindset.

To join and participate in the group, candidates must meet one or all of the following criteria:

be on federal or state probation; have a criminal record; be recently released from jail or prison; be awaiting trial or court for criminal charges; have recently completed probation; have a close family member or loved one who is on probation or facing charges; or have serious criminal triggers (such as feeling the need to shoplift).
