Group working on ideas to improve Houlton airport, use it to promote area

HOULTON, Maine — For years, municipal and economic development officials have lauded the advantages of having Houlton International Airport in the community.

At the same time, the town has struggled over the years to fully capitalize on all of the benefits such a facility can bring.

On Monday evening, town councilors, pilots, and civic and business leaders met for a workshop to discuss ideas and possibilities for the airport and the surrounding Houlton Industrial Park.

Town Manager Marian Anderson said she was anxious to find ways to move the airport forward.

Attendees suggested a few easy, inexpensive projects the town could implement, including adding lights to upgrade the hangar, developing a snack counter at the airport, further promoting the Houlton Flying Club, and cleaning up some of the buildings in the industrial park.

Josh McLaughlin, a board member of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, said he feels the town could do more with marketing. He said when pilots fly into HIA, there are no signs advertising local restaurants, hotels or car dealerships.

“There is nothing for marketing out there,” he said. “We are not even showcasing our town and what we have to offer.”

McLaughlin also noted that pilots and airport visitors don’t see enough signage directing them into the downtown and business district, which he said he felt should change.

Councilor Sue Tortello wondered if the town could tap into the Canadian market by taking advantage of pilots who might want to fly out of the Houlton airport. She also suggested exploring ideas to tap into pilots and airport visitors.

Anderson also was encouraged by attendees to make the airport’s website more inviting and user friendly.

The town manager made note of the top priorities before the meeting adjourned. The group and the airport advisory board will continue to meet in the future.

Another workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 20.
