PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Band of Micmacs will collaborate with 18 other Aroostook County agencies to assure the success of this year’s Youth Prevention Day, which will take place at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Thursday, May 23.
Seventh-grade students from Aroostook County schools will arrive at UMPI at approximately 9 a.m. that morning. They will spend their day with seventh-grade youth from the region building relationships, sharing experiences and learning about drug prevention and healthy lifestyle choices.
Presenters will hail from Aroostook Band of Micmacs, Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative, Aroostook County Action Program, Northern Light Health, Aroostook Mental Health Center, The Northern Lighthouse, Wabanaki Public Health and other organizations. Representatives from these organizations will touch on topics ranging from the dangerous health risks of tobacco, marijuana, opioids and other drugs to self-empowerment, resiliency and healthy connections.
Collaborators include the Aroostook County Action Program, SAMHSA Native Connections Program, Aroostook Band of Micmacs and Northern Light AR Gould.
“We are happy to have so many community partners involved in making this event possible,” said Fenton Jones, Boys & Girls Club of Presque Isle director.
This will be UMPI’s second year hosting the event. Last year, more than 350 students from Aroostook County attended.
