CARIBOU, Maine — The Cat Coalition of Western Maine recently held a free spay/neuter clinic for Caribou and the surrounding communities.
According to Norma Milton, Halfway Home Pet Rescue executive director, the three-day event was sponsored by Marion’s Dream Foundation and took place at 31 Herschel St. in Caribou. Veterinarians spayed 90 cats and neutered 64 cats, for a total of 154 cats sterilized.
“The event was held at the Country Farms Market Conference Room at 31 Herschel St. with the site generously donated by owner Mark Kelley,” Milton said.
Halfway Home Pet Rescue volunteers assisted at the registration table and with routine tasks, observed cats during recovery from surgery and also helped provide food for the team of workers. Several members of the public brought in food items as well.
Milton said a couple of local providers saved the day when the Cat Coalition’s Autoclave, used to sterilize surgical instruments, gave out.
“A special thank you is also needed for Dr. David Smith for opening his office to assist with sterilization of surgical equipment when the CCWM Autoclave broke down, and to Ed Bates of Presque Isle who donated a used Autoclave that he was not currently using,” Milton added.
A coalition spokesperson said, “We are so proud to have been a part of doing 154 cats spayed and neutered in Caribou and surrounding areas, and out of that 90 females were done (now that’s a lot of kittens that could have been born to these females).”
