PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Local girls ages 12-16 are invited to take part in an interactive summer art experience to bolster their science communication skills.
The Wintergreen Arts Center of Presque Isle will offer AR Girls, a free two-week “digital interactive art intensive” program from July 22 to Aug. 2.
According to the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, AR Girls is a project funded by the National Science Foundation, designed to help teenage girls who have interest in art to use digital interactive art to develop communication skills relevant to science. The girls will collaborate to create an augmented reality “tour” focusing on a science topic in their local community.
Programs will also be held at Fiddlehead Art and Science Center in Gray and Waterfall Arts in Belfast. The summer program will launch an interactive art club for girls that will continue into October.
Using their artistic talents, participants will work with other girls and community members to create interactive digital art, communicating topics that are important to them and their community. The girls will plan a showcase to present their work and explore more ways to connect to a larger network of creators.
Following the two-week summer session, the interactive club will meet weekly via phone or video conference, with one face-to-face meeting per month, through early October. AR Girls will then share their digital stories with the community during the AR Girls Fall Showcase in October.
No previous experience is required and all girls ages 12-16 are welcome. The program is fun, free, and all materials are provided.
