All of us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society would like to say a huge thank you to all those two-legged and four-legged supporters who came out to join in the fun at our annual Paws for the Cause Walk that was held on June 1.
The sunshine gods finally shined on our event and the weather was beautiful and warm with calm winds — almost unheard of for our annual walk. The CAHS board members were all on board to work and oversee the event. We had a wonderful showing of folks who showed up to pledge and walk. We had many dogs that started their journey at the shelter and were happy to return and walk with their families for a wonderful cause.
Most of our dogs that were up for adoption, and especially one rescued dog, were excited about the attention and the chance to get out and mingle and walk. We had one anonymous donation for $1,000, which brought our fundraising total for the event up to just over $2,500. That is truly amazing.
We have posted many of our participants on our shelter Facebook page. One lady from California received the prize for “traveling the furthest.” We love to see the families that show up to support our little shelter and to know that important life lessons are being taught to the children about giving back to their community. We are very grateful for all your support.
We always encourage the spaying or neutering of all of your pets. There are so many unwanted litters that occur way too often. Altering a pet is the single best thing that you can do for your beloved “four-legged family” member.
According to statistics from the Humane Society of the United States, one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years’ time. One female cat and her offspring can produce 20,736 in four years’ time. Those are sobering facts for sure.
We at the Central Aroostook Humane Society have been proactive in having as many animals as possible altered before they are adopted. We have seen a steady decline in the animals coming into the shelter over the past five years and we can only attribute that to the fact that less litters are occurring from pets being adopted out unaltered. Remember to do your part in helping to control the pet population.
Stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society and check out the wonderful pets that are up for adoption. We are located at 26 Cross Street, Presque Isle. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for lunch from 12 to-12:30. Have a wonderful summer.
