Lady Owls blast Clippers
    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Still stinging from two road losses at the hands of Thomas College (67-56) and Maine Maritime Academy (75-37) the University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team blasted UMaine-Machias 98-32 at Wieden Gymnasium Wednesday night.
     UMPI’s full-court press and running game got the team off to a 24-4 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Showing good sportsmanship, the team backed off the press through the rest of the game.
Again, showing strong depth, the Lady Owls placed six players in double figures. Erica Davis led the team with 22 followed by Ashley Brooker with 14, Michelle Phillips with 12, Liza Maynard and Anna Lenentine with 11 each and Nicole Russell with 10.
Sara Wells led the Clippers with 10.
The Owls’ defense forced 37 turnovers led by Davis’ six steals and nine rebounds. Leah Joy dished out seven assists in the total-team effort.
Next up for the Lady Owls is a long trip to face-off against Mitchell College and Morrisville State College.
Men take tough losses
Since the holiday break, the University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team earned two wins on the season and has come up just short in four contests.
The team started on the road in Halifax for a three-day Atlantic Coach Classic. The Owls lost to host Kings’ College in the first round 76-66 but came back to beat the Tommies of St. Thomas 75-58. The team earned the fifth-place trophy with an 84-75 loss to NSAC.
Mike Latchford led the Owls and was named player-of-the-game twice, while Walker McIntosh earned the designation once.
The Owls stayed on the road as they traveled to Castine to take on the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners. UMPI earned the 53-50 win behind the 21 points and two steals of Anthony Wingate. Latchford added 14.
The Owls faced a well-rested UMaine-Fort Kent team and took an 83-67 loss. Latchford registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Travis Hovey added 15 points.
UMPI finally got a chance to open the New Year at home as they hosted the UMaine-Machias Clippers. The Owls came up short 73-60. Wingate led UMPI with 20 points while McIntosh added 12.
The Owls are at Husson Saturday.
