PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks will host a Flag Day ceremony at the public market pavilion on Riverside Drive at 4 p.m. on June 14, 2019.
Alan Harding, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954, stated, “The Elks Flag Day Ceremony, which is filled with pageantry, patriotic music and presentations by the Loring Job Corps color guard of various flags of historical significance, recounts the history leading to the adoption of our current American flag.”
Harding said, “Flag Day commemorates the adoption of a national flag for the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. June 14, 1777 is also the birthday of the United States Army.”
Flag Day was first celebrated in Texas upon the petition of Elks Lodges in that State, where Flag Day was first known as Elks Flag Day. Flag Day has since been celebrated by Elks Lodges in every state for over 100 years.
“It is especially fitting that our Flag Day ceremony in Presque Isle should be hosted by the Presque Isle Elks,” said Harding, “as the Presque Isle Elks Lodge has consistently been recognized by the Presque Isle city council as the most patriotic organization in our community.”
Following the ceremony, the Elks will host a free barbecue with hot dogs, potato chips and drinks for those in attendance. This event is open to the public.
