A replica of the blockhouse that once stood near the Aroostook River in Fort Fairfield, shown here on Oct. 17, 2018, was built in 1976 by the Frontier Heritage Society. Blockhouses in both Fort Fairfield and Fort Kent played a major role in the “bloodless Aroostook War,” which led to the formal designation of the U.S.-Canadian border.
