115 Years Ago – July 22, 1904
Travel for goods — Nathan Weston left here Monday morning for the Boston and New York markets where he will purchase his fall and winter stock for the ‘Fashion.’
Attends meeting — Dr. L.B. Stuart and Dr. L.P. Hughes were in Bangor this week attending a meeting of the Maine Dental Association.
100 Years Ago – July 23, 1919
Attend conference — Supt. of Schools, Thos. P. Packard, returned last week, from Castine, where he attended a conference of School Supt. and principals.
Left the business — W. B. Drysdale, the Tailor, has sold out his business in the Frisbie block and left the first of the week for Biddeford, where he will make his headquarters. Mr. Drysdale will handle the Duplex chair in that section.
75 Years Ago – July 27, 1944
Bus service — Birdseye-Snider today announced the beginning of regular bus service between towns north and south of Houlton to transport workers to and from the pea factory here. A bus has been chartered from the Bangor and Aroostook and a regular schedule will be carried out. It is the plan to operate the bus from Bridgewater, south to Houlton for the day shift of the factory and from Oakfield and Smyrna to Houlton for workers on the night shift, Miller Stanton, local manager said.
Attends clinic — Mrs. Sam Fraser has returned from Boston where she attended a ten day’s Personal and Guidance Clinic held at Boston University. Mrs. Fraser is Personal and Guidance instructor in Houlton High School.
50 Years Ago – July 23, 1969
New Book — A new book by Mrs. Kidney describes living in Allagash. Mrs. Kidney and her husband, Milford, who had lived in Houlton from 1938 to 1941, have been living in a one-room camp in the Allagash Region for 12 years, spring, summer and fall. The many experiences of living in such a remote place have been recorded in her new book, ‘Away From it All.’
Silver wedding anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Stuart L. Lenentine were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary at their home with an open house given by their daughter, Mrs. Sandra Roy. The couple was married by the Rev. H.L. Kennedy at Houlton on July 17, 1944. They have resided in Monticello and have four children.
25 Years Ago – July 27, 1994
30 years — Operations Manager Keith Saunders, of A.E. Staley Company presented Stan Winslow with his 30-year service award. Winslow resides in Hodgdon with is wife, Sonya.
Shopping spree — The Retail Trade Board has announced that Missy Fleming is the winner of the $1,000 shopping spree awarded as part of the recent Midnight Madness promotion. Missy is the wife of keith Flemming, formerly of Houlton. They were visiting the area from San Diego, Calif., during the Fouth of July weekend.
