101 Years Ago – July 25, 1918
Mr. Akeley’s gift to our editor — Mr. George Akeley presented the Star-Herald Editor with a box of very handsome Cobbler potatoes, grown by J. J. Ross & Son, Seaford, Del., from seed produced on Mr. Akeley’s seed farm near Presque Isle Village. This New Jersey firm ran a thousand-acre farm, and the previous year raised 175 acres of rye, 150 acres of wheat, 45 acres of tomatoes, 15 acres of cucumbers and 125 acres of potatoes. In a letter B. L. Ross, one of the firm, said he was much pleased with the potato seed supplied him by Mr. Akeley and found it perfectly satisfactory.
75 Years Ago – July 27, 1944
Joined WACs on 20th birthday — Pvt. Arline Kempton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Kempton of Presque Isle, enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps June 8, 1944, on the day of her 20th birthday. She took basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Pvt. Kempton said she liked Army life very much and was very proud to wear the uniform of the Army of the United States. She graduated from the Presque Isle High School with the class of ‘42.
Sweeney again named recorder of local court — Donald N. Sweeney, recorder of the Municipal Court, was renominated by Governor Sewall for another term.
50 Years Ago – July 23, 1969
Kiwanis in upset victory — The last place Kiwanis Club team upset the league-leading Elks by using its strong hitting to produce five runs in the last inning in a come-from-behind 8-7 victory in the major league game of the week. The Kiwanis exploded for five markers in the top of the fifth frame on three singles by D. Knox, L. McGlinn and B. Johnson, a double by Andy Wile and an inside-the-park home run by Jay Tarbell. Strong pitching by reliever Tarbell got the Elks out in order in the bottom of the inning. The victory gave the Kiwanis team its second win in five games.
Patterson appointed to ASC job — The appointment of Daniel E. Patterson as assistant professor of English at the Aroostook State College of the University of Maine, was announced by President Clifford O. T. Wieden. Patterson graduated from the University of Missouri with an undergraduate major in journalism. His master of arts degree was awarded by the University of New Mexico where he taught during the previous seven years. All course work for his doctorate had been completed. He served as a graduate and teaching assistant at the University of Mexico for three years prior to his tenure as an instructor and assistant professor.
25 Years Ago – July 27, 1994
MPG earned regional recognition — Maine Potato Growers Inc. won a regional award in the Environmental Respect Awards program, a national program honoring environmental stewardship among U.S. farm supply retailers. The business was one of only eight from across the country to be honored with the award in 1994 and was chosen from more than 1,500 business who entered the competition. A committee of industry experts and past winners selected the regional winners based on storage and handling procedures in the physical plant, proper fertilizer and agricultural chemical application methods, the facility’s design, leadership in environmental activism and concern for stewardship and safety among employees, customers and the community.
