WASHBURN, Maine — Washburn District High School Principal and Superintendent Larry Worcester announced the honor parts for the Class of 2019. They are: valedictorian, Edwin McLaughlin, salutatorian, Noah White, first honor essayist, Julia Dahlgren, and second honor essayist, Sydney Chavez.
McLaughlin is the son of Sherry and Andrew McLaughlin. He was awarded the highest overall GPA in grades 9, 10 and 12 and also has consistently achieved highest honor roll all through high school. He is a member of the Varsity Club and was treasurer senior year. He has participated in chorus 9, 10, 12, soccer 10-12, cross country 9-12 and track and field sophomore year.
McLaughlin plans to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall.
White is the son of Amy and Matthew White. This year he received the Principal’s Award through the Maine Principals’ Association as well as the Aroostook Scholar Athlete. In his junior year, je was selected for the Phi Betta Kappa Award recognizing intellectual curiosity and achievement. He has earned 34 college credits prior to graduation and maintained a 4.0. He has consistently achieved highest honor roll and was a 2018 recipient for student of the month and was a United States Youth Senate Finalist.
In 2017 he was awarded the highest overall GPA for his class. He was freshman class secretary/treasurer, student council member for 2016-2019, Varsity Club officer, National Honor Society Chapter and Skills USA treasurer 2018. He has participated in baseball 10-12, basketball 9-12, cross-country and soccer senior year. He was awarded the Coaches Award in both cross country and baseball in 2018.
White plans to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall.
Dahlgren is the daughter of Mary and Merle Dahlgren. She has been a high honor roll student all through high school and has participated in Destination Imagination. Her DI group has won several state competitions and they have competed at the national level. She is in the Gifted and Talented program and National Honor Society.
She was class president freshman year and class secretary sophomore through senior years. She has participated in basketball 9-10, soccer 9-12 and softball 9-12. She has been a member of the Civil Rights Team at WDHS and recently made a presentation in Augusta highlighting the group’s work.
Dahlgren plans to attend the University of Southern Maine in the fall.
Chavez is the daughter of Shelley and Rodney Chavez. She was senior class president as well as a member of the National Honor Society and NHS secretary/treasurer. She was selected as student of the quarter in both junior and senior year at Presque Isle Regional Career and Technology Center in their business program.
She has served as a member of the Varsity Club all through high school. She has also been the manager for the girls’ soccer team 9-12, manager for cross-country 10-12, basketball manager 9-12 softball manager 9 and player 10-12, and track and field manager 9-12.
Chavez plans to attend Northern Maine Community College in the fall.
