115 Years Ago – July 29, 1904
Starts new business — Mr. Charles Huggard, for several years employed at the B. & A. and paint shops in this town, has resigned his position to go into business for himself. He has opened a paint shop in the Dykeman building, where he will give strict attention to the painting of carriages and sleighs. Mr. Huggard is a careful and painstaking workman and guarantees satisfaction.
100 Years Ago – July 30, 1919
Making improvements — The Dunn Furniture Co. are making improvements in the rear of their store on the building which was formerly a stable. They have squared the pitch roof, making more room on the second floor, and also lessened the fire hazard.
Advertising — Theo. J. Fox and brother, Howard, left here by auto Sunday for New York, and enroute will distribute advertising for the Houlton fair.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 3, 1944
Help needed — The Red Cross Chapter here has yarn for 40 more Navy scarves which must be knit before the quota of 120 is filled. These scarves are urgently needed and it is hoped that there will be a prompt response to this call for aid.
Moves office — Walter Cary Esq. has moved his law office from Market Square to his residence at 138 Main Street.
50 Years Ago – July 30, 1969
Receives cash award — Mrs. Althea Gravelle of RFD 1, Houlton, was the winner Saturday evening of Chain Apparel Shops’ Cash Bonus Night. Mrs. Gravell presented Mrs. Mabel White, bookkeeper for the local store, with a sum of $75.
Surprise party — Mr. and Mrs. Leroy O’Hara were honored at a family celebration at the Parkview restaurant, in observance of their silver wedding anniversary. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. O’Hara, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne McCarthy and Michael O’Hara. The couple were married in Patten on July 22, 1944 with the Rev. L. T. Savine officiating.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1994
Celebration— Leroy and Christine O’Hara of Houlton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 22. Dinner was served at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Campbell, in Patten. They were married July 22, 1944, at the Campbells’ home. Rev. Sabin of Crystal officiated. Their attendants were her sister, Arlene, and Carlton Huntley of Sherman.
Family reunion — A family reunion was held by the descendants of Rev. Reuben Doody and Abbie Demerchant Doody of Ludlow. Sixty members of the family enjoyed a buffet dinner on July 3 at Joe’s Restaurant and a picnic dinner was served at Watson Hall on July 4.
