Cheer competition scheduled Friday

    CARIBOU — Local cheering squads will have the opportunity to tune up for the upcoming regional championship meets and compete for awards as well at the annual Aroostook League Cheering Championships, which will take place at Caribou High School Friday beginning at 7 p.m.

     COMPETITION SEASON — The five-time defending Class D state champion Central Aroostook cheerleading squad, including Brittany Drost and Dayna Collins (background) will compete in Friday’s Aroostook League Championship at Caribou High School.

    As of presstime, teams who have committed to take part in the event are the five-time Class D state champion Central Aroostook Panthers, along with Fort Fairfield, Houlton, Presque Isle and the host Vikings.

    The two teams with the highest scores will receive awards. There will also be a Spirit Award, which is voted upon by the competing teams, as well as acknowledgements for best team dance, tumbling, motions, jumps and stunts.

    An all-star stunt group award, two all-star jump awards and two all-star tumbling awards are other honors up for grabs.

    The admission fee is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

    The competition season is already under way for the Caribou and Presque Isle cheerleaders, who participated in Saturday’s Big East Conference Championships held at Hermon High School.

    The host Hawks were the winners of the title by compiling 127.1 points. Ellsworth was second with 117.6, followed by John Bapst with 103.3, Caribou with 97.9 and Presque Isle with 95.5.

    The other three teams involved in the event were Old Town (90.7), Mount Desert Island (85.6) and Washington Academy (79.8).

    The Penobscot Valley Conference large-school championships, which will also involve both Caribou and Presque Isle, are set for Saturday at noon in Ellsworth.

    The Eastern Maine Championships will be held at the Bangor Auditorium Jan. 26 and the state championships are Feb. 9, also in Bangor.
