Grades 5 and 6 boys’ basketball
The Spurs used a balanced scoring attack and a big second half to complete the 34-24 comeback victory over the Pistons. Michael Guerrette led the Spurs with a game high 14 points. Bradley Shields, Jonathan Rochester, and Karson Wilcox each chipped in with four points. Craig Nadeau, David Milliard, Jamey Lessard, and Jeremy Shaw contributed two points apiece. Brandon LeBlanc was the high scorer for the Pistons with 12 points. Hale Cushman and Karson Eaton scored six points each.
13-4 second quarter run sparked the Celtics to the 33-22 win over the Spurs. Drew Bates led the Celtics with 12 points. Khyver Lowe also ended up in double digits, finishing with 11 points. Josh Gordon poured in eight points and Drew Barrett chipped in with two points. Cody Lyford paced the Spurs with 12 points. Michael Guerrette contributed six points, and Jeremy Shaw and Karson Wilcox each added two points.
Grades 5 and 6 girls’ basketball
Hannah Guerrette poured in 14 points to help the Liberty beat the Stars 30-14. Kelsey Burlock added eight points for the Liberty. Kaleigh Kinney finished with six points, and Courtney Carney rounded out the Liberty scoring with two points. The Stars got 10 points from Sara Gilson, and the duo of Jaylyn Levasseur and Kelsie Spooner each scored two points.
Hannah Guerrette scored eight of her game high 14 points in the decisive second quarter, helping the Liberty defeat the Mercury 22-14. Kaleigh Kinney added four points, and Kelsey Burlock and Courtney Carney chipped in with two points apiece. Lora Ireland led the way for the Mercury with 10 points. Carly Bell contributed four points.
Hotshot competition
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the MRPA Hotshot basketball competition at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
The MRPA Hotshot Competition involves shooting from five “Hot Spots” marked on one half of a basketball court. The competition tests each contestant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding abilities.
Shooting times are as follows: Monday, Jan. 22 from 4:30-5:15 p.m. for 13-15 and 16-18 year olds, 5:15-6 p.m. for 11-12 year olds, and 6-6:45 p.m. for 9-10 year olds. Additional shooting for all ages will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23 and Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 5:30-7 p.m. for all ages. Age is determined as of March 31, 2007.
Participants may shoot on any or all days, with players’ highest score to be recorded. The top three in each division advance to the regional competition, to be held in Caribou on Feb. 22.
Father/Daughter Dance
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department’s annual Father/Daughter Dance is scheduled for Feb. 9 from 7-9 p.m. as the William V. Haskell Community Center.
The event is open to girls in grades K-6 and their fathers.
Advance tickets go on sale beginning today. The cost is $6 per couple.
Grades 1-2 Little Wildcat basketball
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will begin registration for the Little Wildcat basketball program on Monday, Jan. 29 for Presque Isle residents at the William V. Haskell Community Center. Non-residents may register beginning Feb. 1.
The program is offered to boys and girls in first and second grades and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays after school at the community center.
The registration fee is $15. The program begins the week of Feb. 26.
Big Rock ski passes
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has discounted lift tickets for Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill. Junior (ages 6 to 17) lift tickets will be sold for $14, or 22 percent off the regular price, while adult lift tickets will be sold for $19, or 24 percent off the regular price.
Kids Ski Club
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is now taking registration for the Kids Ski Club. This is a learn to cross country ski program for children in grades 1-8. This program is designed to teach kids the fun of cross country skiing through games, play, and the use of a terrain park. Parents are encouraged to participate.
The program runs from Jan. 20-March 17, Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.-noon. The cost for the program is $15. Youth open gym
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has started its open gym hours on Sundays and Saturdays throughout the winter from 1-5 p.m. Grades 1-5 are welcome from 1-3, and junior high and high school students are welcome from 3-5. Available activities include gym games, board games, ping pong, foosball and pool. There is no cost.
Middle School Only open gym
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will offer a middle school only open gym time on Friday evenings from 6:30-9 p.m. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to come and participate in open gym and other activities. Possible group activities, such as tubing and bowling, may be scheduled for future dates. This is open to SAD 1 students only.
