Smith takes men’s ski race

MADAWASKA — The 2013 Aroostook Cup Series kicked off Sunday with the Deprey Classic.

The annual freestyle ski race served as the inaugural event of the series of community races and tours hosted by clubs around Aroostook County and sponsored by the Maine Winter Sports Center.

Events take place on Saturdays or Sundays from January through March. Participants can take advantage of the citizen races, social ski tours and snowshoe scavenger hunts.

For the races, individuals can earn points for their participation throughout the season and awards are given on both an individual or club basis.

Sunday’s race, hosted by the Four Seasons Trail Association of Madawaska, featured a 6.5-kilometer skate ski race, a tour, and a kid’s scavenger hunt on the Four Seasons Trails.

Winners in each age division of the men’s and women’s races were treated to beautiful ski hats, courtesy of the Depreys.

In the women’s competition, skiers from Fort Kent’s 10th Mountain Ski Club swept the field with Melinda Bard taking a definitive win with a time of 23:16, more than two minutes ahead of her competition. Patty Hebert was second and Sherry Dubis took third.

On the men’s side, Mike Smith of Nordic Heritage Sport Club of Presque Isle was the winner, with Jeff Dubis of 10th Mountain grabbing second and Marco Boucher of Four Seasons ending up third.

The next Aroostook Cup event is the annual Frostbite Citizen’s Race and Tour in Fort Kent on Sunday, Jan. 27.
