Tourney quarterfinals to be shown online

HOULTON — Northern Maine Media Inc. (NMM), the home of WHOU 100.1 FM, has secured the exclusive contract with the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) to video stream the 24 games of the Eastern Maine Class B, C and D basketball quarterfinals from the Bangor Auditorium. The quarterfinals will be broadcast live online at www.whoufm.com starting Feb. 15.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity,” said NMM President Fred Grant. “We’ve been working hard for over a year perfecting the technology for online video broadcasting and basketball fans are thrilled with the results. Those fans who can’t make it to Bangor for the quarterfinals will be pleased to finally see the games they have previously only been able to hear.”

WHOU radio has been calling basketball games for over 50 years and veteran announcer, Ken Holck, has provided the play-by-play calls for the station for the last 15 years.

“We started with video streaming quietly during last year’s season and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response.” stated Holck. “We had over 25,000 views of our games last year and we’ve already surpassed that number this year. Adding streaming video to the quarterfinals is going to make a lot of people very happy.”

WHOU covers a minimum of 50 basketball games in northern Maine every season and covers all Aroostook County games at the eastern Maine tournament. This year will be the first that the MPA has allowed for a video streaming broadcast of the quarterfinals.

“Covering all 24 quarterfinal games at the tournament will be an increase for us, but, as always, we will have quality announcers to make sure all teams get the coverage they deserve,” Grant said.

Northern Maine Media purchased WHOU in 2012 and in addition to radio and online streaming video, the company assists business and organizations with web development, hosting, social media and marketing.
