On Thursday, Aug. 15, the Wednesday Night Fiddlers performed at the Mapleton Lions Hall for two hours. They played a mix of traditional fiddle tunes and country songs. There were 17 members present for the concert. The ages of the group ranged from 12 years to some distant age.
The Haystack Historical Society and Mapleton Lions Club appreciate the willingness of the fiddlers to come at no charge and help the two organizations with their fundraising, and thank all of the audience members who attended and donated.

Open house tonight
Mapleton Elementary School’s traditional annual open house to begin the school year will occur tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 28.
There will be sessions for new students and their parents as well as returning students and their parents. The first hour, from 4 to 5 p.m., is for students attending the morning session. For students attending the afternoon session, the open house will be from 5 to 6 p.m.
For Pre-K and kindergarten students, there are two cookie and juice open houses.
For returning students in grades 1-5, the open house for them and their parents will be from 5 to 6 p.m.
This year fourth- and fifth-grade students will find changes made in their classrooms. The folding room dividers between classrooms were removed and replaced with solid walls. The changes will improve the educational quality of the rooms by adding more wall space, eliminating the noise between rooms and adding more electrical outlets to each room. To see these changes and meet teachers, parents of new students and returning students are invited to the open house this afternoon.
Dan Duprey, school principal, encouraged parents to join teachers and staff for the open house. He invited parents to come and visit your child’s classroom and tour the school before the 2019-20 year begins.
First Friday luncheon
The monthly First Friday luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Mapleton Methodist Church.
The luncheon promises to be a fun luncheon as some of our local snowbirds are still with us and will be in attendance. The chefs are planning an enjoyable meal. While the food is always delicious, the real joy is being with long-time friends as well as making new friends sharing family updates, stories and memories.
Remember there is no charge for the lunch, but donations will be accepted.
