WASHBURN NEWS

The Washburn quilting group A Stichin’ and a Givin’ heard the news that the Presque Isle Rotary Club was donating 42 much-needed beds to the Sister Mary O’Donnell Homeless Shelter in Presque Isle.
LADIES AID HOMELESS — Ladies with the Washburn quilting group A Stichin’ and A Givin’ recently donated over 50 quilts for use by clients of Homeless Services of Aroostook. The items were presented to Feb. 12 to Wayne McCray, representative of the Presque Isle homeless shelter. QUILTS DONATED — Members of the Washburn A Stitchin’ and A Givin’ Quilters’ group recently presented 54 quilts made for the homeless shelter in Presque Isle. With that news they took it upon themselves to contact Homeless Services of Aroostook and pledge to make a homemade quilt for each of the new beds. Since Christmas they have exceeded their goal and completed 54 handmade quilts for the shelter.
On Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Washburn Trailrunners’ clubhouse they presented those 54 beautiful quilts to Wayne McCray, representing the Presque Isle homeless shelter.
The Washburn quilting group meets every Tuesday at the Washburn Trailrunners’ clubhouse to work on quilts to donate to Hospice of Aroostook. Anybody interested in lending a hand is welcome to stop by any Tuesday. Most of the material for their quilts are donated but more donations of new cotton material are always needed.
Notice to Washburn residents
On Jan. 29, the residents of the town of Washburn voted at a special town meeting to withdraw from the Pay-As-You-Throw program. You can continue using the orange bags through the end of February, but as of March 1 a change will need to be made. Residents can either hire a hauler of their choice to take their garbage to the landfill, or each resident can take their garbage to the landfill themselves. If you have any questions regarding this process, call the Town Office at 455-8485.

Eldest Perham citizen sought
The Perham Ladies are searching for information on who might be the eldest community member. We would like to honor them by presenting them with our Perham Cane at a supper to be held sometime in March, date to be determined.
Sadly, we lost our first Perham Cane holder, Mr. Henry Nutting, on Feb. 12, 2012 at the age of 95. The Perham Cane was made by the Viola boys and master carver, Tom Cote, of Limestone.
We are ready to make our next presentation and need help finding our town’s next cane holder. Contact Ellie or Debra or any one of the Perham Ladies if you have information to share. We will need an exact birth date, year included. The hope is we will present the cane at a supper held in honor of the recipient and their family. It is a very special evening and we need your help to make this happen. Thank you.
Group sends cards
A reminder, the Perham Ladies send out get-well cards and cards of condolence. If you know of someone who is unwell or in mourning and needs to know they are being thought of, please contact any of the ladies or specifically Mrs. Sylvia Wardwell.
