With the calendar turning to fall, local boys and girls soccer squads continue to be red-hot as the season nears the midway point.
The Houlton girls remain undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record, which ranks the Shires fourth in Class C North. Southern Aroostook (5-2) is fifth in Class D North, while Hodgdon (4-2) is 10th, Katahdin (2-1-1) is 12th and East Grand (0-7) is 17th.
In boys soccer, Houlton (2-2-1) is ranked sixth in Class C North, while Hodgon (5-0-1) is sixth in Class D North, Southern Aroostook (3-3-1) is 10th and Katahdin (2-2) is 15th.
The following is a recap of games played through Saturday that were reported to the newspaper.
Girls Soccer
Southern Aroostook 4, Hodgdon 3 (2OT) — Madison Russell delivered the game winning goal in double overtime to lift Southern Aroostook past Hodgdon Monday, Sept. 16.
Russell finished with two goals on the day for the Warriors. Mikyla Howland scored all three goals for Hodgdon.
Houlton 4, Orono 0 — At Houlton Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Shires knocked off previously-unbeaten Orono on the strength of solo goals from four different players — Samantha Johnson, Breanne Barton, Sierra Hoops and Elena Ardell.
Abbie Worthley made three saves for the Shires, while Anna Drinkert had seven saves for the Red Riots (3-1-1).
Hodgdon 6, East Grand 0 — At Danforth Thursday, Delaney Little and Sabra Scott each had two goals, while Lauren McGillicuddy and Emma Drew both had one as the Hawks rolled past East Grand.
Southern Aroostook 2, Katahdin 1 — At Dyer Brook Thursday, Emma Nadeau and Aliyah Morales each scored a solo goal to lift the Warriors past Katahdin. Makaelyn Porter notched an assist for SA. Emily Beyer scored the lone goal for the Cougars.
Houlton 8, George Stevens Academy 0 — At Houlton Saturday, the Shires erupted for eight goals and the defense did not allow a goal against George Stevens Academy. Bre Barton tallied four goals, while Sierra Hoops had two and Samantha Johnson and Elena Ardell each had one. Barton, Olivia Henderson, Amelia Ivey, Becca Howe and Grace Johnson all had one assist for the Shires. Abbie Worthley had one save in goal for Houlton, while Vanessa Sherwood and Luna Perry-St. Peter combined for nine saves for GSA.
Boys Soccer
Southern Aroostook 4, Hodgdon 4 (2OT) — At Hodgdon Monday, Sept. 16, the Hawks and Warriors battled to a 4-4 stalemate after two overtime periods. Hodgdon’s Josh Foster booted in three goals for the Hawks, while Drew Duttweiler added a solo goal. Josh McGillicuddy had two assists.
Southern Aroostook was led by Gavin Vining with two goals, while Xavier Morales and Graham Siltz each had one.
Michael Sanders and Elijah Matheson combined for six saves on 14 shots for Hodgdon, while Jacob Brooks had seven saves on 13 shots for the Warriors.
Orono 1, Houlton 1 — At Houlton Wednesday, the Shires battled Orono to a 1-1 stalemate after two overtime periods. Keegan Gentle scored the lone goal for Houlton off a pass from Jaron Gentle. Jackson Campbell scored the lone goal for Orono.
Drew Foley made nine saves on 14 shots for the Shires, while Javier Alicen-Artiago had five saves on 10 shots for Orono (4-0-1).
Southern Aroostook 4, Katahdin 0 — At Dyer Brook Thursday, Gavin Vining booted in three goals, while Camden Porter added one as the Warriors rolled past Katahdin. Chance Barrows, Lucas Duff and Peyton Lawlor each had an assist for SA.
Jacob Brooks made three saves in goal for the Warriors, while Caleb Giles stopped 10 shots for Katahdin.
George Stevens Academy 2, Houlton 1 — At Houlton Saturday, Shire Keegan Gentle scored the lone Houlton goal. Nate Mason and Owen Vinal both booted in goals for GSA. Drew Foley stopped five of 15 shots for the Shires, while Parken Allen saved 7 of 12 shots for the Eagles.
Hodgdon 5, MSSM 1 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Drew Duttweiler scored two goals, while Josh Foster, Josh McGillicuddy and Michael Sanders each had one goal as the Hawks soared past MSSM. McGillicuddy had two assists, while Foster and Sam Duff each had one. Toben Streevy scored for MSSM, with Harrison Waiters notching an assist. Elijah Matheson made three saves on six shots for the Hawks, while Myles Benica and David Anderson combined for four saves on 15 shots for the Penguins.
Van Buren 2, Katahdin 0 — At Van Buren Saturday, Deacon Thiverage scored both goals as Van Buren shutout Katahdin.
