Three year old Theresa Daigle of Frenchville joins the thousands of persons that are ‘turning to’ in Aroostook County this month in the chore of harvesting potatoes, the County’s major crop. Although mechanical harvesters are being used extensively, many farmers still find a need for pickers. 115 Years Ago – Sept. 30, 1904

     Getting ready — Don A. H. Powers is preparing to set a crew of men at work soon to clear up and get things in readiness for the new block he is to build on Main Street. The cellar will be cleared out and all the rock hauled so that the work of building can be started early next spring.

100 Years Ago – Oct. 1, 1919

     Changed number — R. M. Lawlis has had his telephone number changed from 111 to 44.

     Accepted position — John F. Law, who has been employed in Mosely’s shoe store in Boston for a number of years, has accepted a position at the Houlton Shoe Hospital as a salesman.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 5, 1944

     Returns from trip — Mrs. Ethel Sterling returned Friday from a three weeks’ trip which she spent with relatives in Montreal and in Boston where she attended the Gift Shop buying for the Art Novelty Shop.

     Silver wedding anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Emmons Robinson were honored guests Sunday evening when 28 of their friends gathered at their home in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary. A picnic supper was served and a social evening was enjoyed.

50 Years Ago – Oct. 1, 1969

     Honored on retirement — Mrs. Hannah Richardon was honored at a retirement party last week at the Aroostook County Courthouse. Mrs. Richardson, deputy register, who was employed by the Probate Office for nearly 17 years, was presented with sums of money, gifts and flowers. Refreshments were catered by Statewide Caterers. Attending were representatives of the legal fraternity, the employees of the Courthouse, a representative of the County Commissioners office and the County treasurer, totaling 52 guests.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 5, 1994

    Helping hands — Employees of Key Bank were out in the community helping their neighbors on  Sept. 14. This year their project was painting the front of the John Millar Arena. Workers were; Gerry Scott, Gwen Savoy, Sherry Lenentine, Joan Logan Eva Brown, Barbara Pettit, Marie Winfield, Joyce London, Lyla Dow, Connie Manuel, Cathy Scott, Linna McLaughlin, Sally Swallow, Shirley Reardon and Chris Fitzpatrick.

    Winner — Verna Levesque of Houlton was the winner of the Coca-Cola Old Town Discovery canoe drawing at Andy’s IGA. Levesque was congratulated by Alan Bulley, Andy’s IGA store manager.
