WESTMANLAND, Maine — North Lakes Fire and Rescue responded to a fire in Westmanland on Saturday afternoon, which led to the total loss of one structure and one of the occupants being transported to Cary Medical Center with minor injuries.
North Lakes Fire and Rescue arrived with five trucks and 19 firefighters and found “a fully involved structure fire in the woods,” according to Fire Chief Darren Woods. He added that a neighbor assisted an occupant of the camp who was able to escape, but also sustained minor injuries.
Woods said that the department is not releasing the individual’s name at this time, but that the person was treated at the hospital and then released.
Stockholm Fire Department assisted North Lakes Fire and Rescue with tanker support and the Caribou Fire and Ambulance assisted covering other stations, which Woods said brought nine more men and three more trucks. EMERA was also on the scene.
The fire remains under investigation, but initial reports indicate that it started “from smoking materials,” according to the chief.
Smoke and fire damage gutted the structure, which was deemed “a total loss.” The building was insured.
