It is that beautiful, leaf-peeping time of the year in The County: cooler nights, warm days, and harvest all around.
It is the time of year when folks are looking toward winter: changing tires over, making sure generators are working, stockpiling pellets, wood, oil and other fuel to stay warm over the following months.
This is also the time of year when we at the Presque Isle Police Department offer a few safety reminders.
Change the batteries in your smoke detectors when the time sets back an hour.
You may have winter (studded) tires on your vehicle beginning Oct. 1. But don’t wait for the first snow, as that may be too late.
Remember to trick or treat safely at Halloween with these tips:
– Wear weather-friendly costumes that allow you to see and be seen.
– Walk with an adult or in a group and watch for traffic. Carry a light or have reflective items on your person.
– Make sure to inspect candy before consumption, if packages are already open, throw those pieces out.
– -Drivers please remember to watch for our little ghouls and goblins out collecting treats – they may pop out from between vehicles.
– Also for those driving around, please maintain parking to one side of the street only – this allows for better foot and vehicular traffic through crowded areas, especially allowing for passage of emergency vehicles. And it is a city ordinance to park on only one side of residential streets: the north side of the street for east/west streets, and the east side of the street for north/south streets.
Finally, remember that the Presque Isle Police Department hands out candy, as well, and we love to see the menagerie of costumes. Stop by. Have fun. Be safe.
