115 Years Ago – Oct. 21, 1904
Opened to the public — The Cary Library opened to the public last week and is being liberally patronized by the public. New books are arriving daily. Miss Anna Barnes is the librarian in charge.
A demonstration — Mr. H. Hyman, the representative of the Eastern Talking Machine Co., will give a demonstration of the Victor Talking Machines at Music Hall tonight. The entertainment is free to those holding cards.
100 Years Ago – Oct.22, 1919
Accepts position — Miss Josephine Ketchum has accepted a position in the schools of Cherryfield, where she will teach Latin and French.
Receives patent — John Webb of Island Falls has recently received a patent for a device for unfastening hay wire from a bundle of hay or straw without cutting, which when placed upon the market cannot help but meet with many sales.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 26, 1944
Work to start immediately — The trustees of Ricker have accepted the bid of the Lane Construction Company to raze the walls of Wording Hall. It is expected that this organization which submitted the lowest bid will undertake the removing of the walls almost immediately. Lane Construction Company is the organization that has practically completed the bridge in Houlton over the Meduxnekeag River.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 22, 1969
Guilford woolens displayed — The Home Economics Department of Houlton High School was presented a program from the Guildford Woolen Industry, Guilford, Last week. Featured were exhibits and slides of fabric manufacture and a show of fashions made from Guilford woolens. Models were; Dianne Kennedy, Lorie Suitter, Barbara Drake, Joyce Tower, Patricia Russell and student teacher Miss Sharon Daley.
Attend auto show— Mr. and Mrs. Robert Anderson spent last week in Key Biscayne, Florida, where they attended a Western Auto Show.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 26, 1994
Donations made — Habitat for Humanity and the Houlton Senior Citizens each received donations from a recent spaghetti supper held in Houlton by John Baldacci, congressional candidate. Accepting the donation was Rev. Pat Thompson, president of the area Habitat for Humanity chapter; Melissa Horn, Habitat for Humanity’s fund-raising chair; Dolly Estabrook, president of Houlton Senior Citizens; and Kay Bell, candidate for District 142 in the Maine House of Representatives.
Celebrating 50 years — Mr. and Mrs. Hazen Drake celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 8. The couple were married Dec. 9, 1944 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Oakville, New Brunswick, Canada. Their attendants were Ruth McLellan Guy, sister of the bride, and Glen McCordic, cousin of the bridegroom. The occasion was planned by their children, Wayne, Graydon and Gloria, and their families.
