115 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1904
Change publication date — The Aroostook Pioneer, hitherto published on Tuesdays, will next week change its date of publication and will be issued on Wednesdays.
Working on the walls — Thibadeau Bros. have decided to finish the walls of the suites in their hotel in adamant rather than in plaster. This is a step in the right direction as adamant is fireproof and is the latest hinish for hotel rooms. Work on the block is progressing rapidly and all of the three stores in the block will soon be occupied.
100 Years Ago – Oct. 29, 1919
Houlton girl makes good — Houlton friends of Miss Lydia Hanagan will be pleased to learn that she has recently been appointed as assistant secretary to Senator Howe of Georgia, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. Miss Hanagan for the past two years has held the position of stenographer in the aircraft division and resigned to accept her present position.
Accepts position — Geo. A. Smith, a former resident of this town, has returned to Houlton and accepted a position with the Pioneer Publishing Company.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 2, 1944
Museum receives gift — The trustees of the historical and Art Museum Association take pleasure in announcing the receipt of a check for $1,000 sent to Philip D. Tingley, treasurer of the association, by George H. Shaw of New York City, son of R. W. Shaw, president of the association. This money is to be expended under the direction of the museum trustees in defraying expenses that are being and will continue to be incurred in getting the museum collection marked and rearranged for exhibition, catalogued, printed and the various things that will be needed.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 29, 1969
Women’s club tea — The Houlton Woman’s Club opened its 66th season with a membership tea at the Northland Hotel, with 51 members and two guests attending. Mrs. Fred C. Greaves, president of the club, presided at the tea table.
Attends seminar — Mrs. Mary V. McGillicuddy attended a seminar on museum registration and records keeping sponsored by the Maine State Museum in Augusta on Friday and Saturday of last week.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 2, 1994
Health donation — Frank Zeman, manager of the National Starch Company in Island Falls, presented a $2,000 donation to Peg Hammond, director of the Health Services Foundation. The money will be used to support and improve the health care services of the region. National Starch contributes to the foundation on an annual basis. It is a lifetime member of the ‘Society of 72’ and recently agreed to sponsor a Boy and the Boot payroll deduction program for plant employees.
Surprise party — Ron Murray, a French teacher at Hodgdon High School, presented Houlton High School librarian Joe Inman with a gift certificate from L.L. Bean for Inman’s work as SAD 70’s librarian. Hodgdon faculty and staff threw a surprise party for Inman to show their appreciation for Inman’s service to SAD 70.
