101 Years Ago – October 31, 1918
Pamphlets — Pamphlets on the uses of concrete issued by the Portland Cement Association, Chicago, had been added to the collection of references on building at the Presque Isle public library.
These pamphlets were written by competent engineers experienced in concrete work and contain practical information which was of assistance to those engaged in concrete construction and others who were contemplating the use of cement in making permanent, economical and fireproof improvements about their homes. These references were well worth looking over.
75 Years Ago – November 2, 1944
H. E Bryant named — H. E. Bryant of the Maine Potato Growers, Inc., Presque Isle, was named a member of the White Potato Industry Advisory Committee for the National OPA, the Maine OPA announced. At the organizational meeting, the committee reviewed the current potato regulation (maximum Price Regulation 271) and discussed a proposed revision of this regulation. A legal minimum prices for the 1945 crop of white potatoes was considered, including a review of area and regional differentials. Also considered were adjustments that should be made in potato prices in case of crop loss.
Michaud an expert infantryman — Brigadier General J. R. Sheetz announced that Pfc. Walter T. Michaud, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Michaud, Presque Isle, was awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge at a base somewhere in the Central Pacific Area. The attainment of this badge and high honor attests to Pfc. Michaud’s physical stamina and his proficiency in shooting and allround infantry training.
50 Years Ago – October 29, 1969
Survant named hospital president — Ellis E. Survant was elected president of the Arthur R. Gould Memorial Hospital. He succeeded Robert Waldron. The election came at the corporation’s annual meeting. Cliford O.T. Wieden was elected vice president and other officers re-elected were Carlton Jimmo, treasurer; Burtt F. Brown, secretary; and Sidney K. Graves, assistant treasurer.
Presque Isle Country Club $1,000 richer — The Keene Country Club was $1,000 richer. A check for that amount was presented to club president, Burton Tompkins Sr., at the annual PICC meeting and awards night by the Spudland Open Golf Tournament president, Joseph J. Freeman. It was given in appreciation of the club facilities which had been used for the previous two years as the site of the Spudland Open Golf Tournament, an event which attracts the top amateur and professional golfers from New England. New directors named during the meeting were Roy Gibson, Joseph Williams, Tompkins, W. S. Tompson and Clement Thorne.
25 Years Ago – November 2, 1994
$70,139 for food and shelter — United Way of Aroostook was notified that $70,139 was awarded to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Aroostook County. The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities U.S.A., National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. and United Way of America, which provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent. The board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county.
Owl harriers compete — Both the men’s and women’s cross-country teams traveled to Sparkill, N.Y. to participate in the KAIA Northeast Regional. Coach Chris Smith and his assistant, Mike Mendonca, both feel good about the teams’ chances.
