Schools, businesses shutter due to first storm of season

CARIBOU, Maine –Schools, businesses, and organizations shuttered across Aroostook County for the first time since last winter after a major storm battered the region on Tuesday.

Tim Duda, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Caribou, said Tuesday that a winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. 

“It is being caused by a low pressure system that is currently moving over the Down East coast of Maine,” he said.

Heavy snow and mixed precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day in some parts of the state. 

Seven-12 inches, with locally higher amounts in the St. John Valley and the North Maine Woods, is expected. The greatest  threat for mixed precipitation will be from Caribou south.

According to Duda, Caribou and Fort Kent have seen 8 inches of snow as of 11 a.m., while Presque Isle has seen 6 inches. Loring also has received 6 inches, while Madawaska has picked up 4 inches.

Houlton also has picked up 2.5 inches.

In Bangor, 2.1 inches has fallen, with some freezing rain mixed in. 

In Piscataquis County, Milo also has received 2.1 inches, while in Washington County, Brookton has picked up 2 inches.

Duda said that the storm will wrap up in the early evening.
