HOULTON, Maine — Three Aroostook County men were honored for their many years of public service, volunteerism and community involvement during a county commissioners meeting Wednesday.
Commissioner Paul Adams read the Proclamations into the public record of the meeting congratulating each man for the Spirit of America Award, which was established in Maine by The Spirit of America Foundation public charity to honor volunteerism. The tribute is presented in the name of Maine municipalities to local individuals, organizations and projects, according to the organization’s website.
Robert Dunphy was presented the honor by his community of Island Falls for rebuilding the historic Island Falls Bell Tower.
“It took four full seasons of work,” Adams said. “And it could not have been done without his perseverance and knowledge.”
Thomas Goff of Merrill also was honored by the town of Merrill for his 40-year career of service to the Board of Selectmen, only deciding in March not to seek re-election. Adams added that Goff also served in the military during Vietnam.
Finally, Ross Crandall was honored by the town of Smyrna for his nearly 40-year career as a selectman. He only resigned from his term after moving to the neighboring town of Oakfield.
Since the first Spirit of America Foundation award was presented in 1991, more than 500 Spirit of America ceremonies have taken place.
