Caribou Wrestling Vikings place 5th in ‘Celebration of Life’ tournament

BUCKSPORT, Maine — The Caribou wrestling team ranked fifth out of 13 teams during a Dec. 7 “Celebration of Life” tournament at Bucksport High School, honoring the life of former student Ryan Detour, who passed away 17 years ago on the same day.

Out of the 13 participating schools, Caribou received a total of 102 points, while Mattanawcook Academy won the tournament with 181. Bucksport High School came in second with 145, Pisqataquis Community High School came in third with 121.5 and Dexter Regional High School ranked fourth with 120 points.

Schools ranked sixth to 13th in the tournament were, Dirigo High School (82),Madison High School (62), Fort Kent Community School (53), Washington Academy (42.5), Independents-Old Town High School (39), Penobscot Valley High School (32), Calais High School (24.5), Dirigo-B (20), Washington Academy-B (13), Dexter-C (10), Bucksport-B (8), Madison-B (7), PCHS-B (7), Washington Academy-C (7), MA-C (7), Fort Kent-B (3) and Independent-Woodland (3).

Eight Caribou wrestlers won matches and contributed to their team’s overall score. Their results on the day are as follows.

Rylee Saucier, competing in the 120-pound weight class, finished 2-2 on the day and placed fourth. Saucier pinned Evan Gagnon, FK, at 1:19; was pinned by Travis Hutchinson, Bucks, at 0:48; won by decision over Taylor Tillinghast, Mad, 13-4; and was pinned by Nathan Mower, Dex, at 2:01.

Caleb Robbins, wrestling in the 138-pound weight class, finished 3-1 on the day and was third. Robbins pinned Nicolas Carrera, Mad, at 0:31; was pinned by Alex Zeller, PCHS, at 3:10; pinned Zack Anderson, Cal, at 2:27; and won in overtime against Owen Libby, Dir, 11-9.

Angel Riopelle, 145 pounds, finished 2-1 and was runner-up in his weight class. Riopelle pinned Colby Currier, PCHS, at 0:59; pinned Joey Garcia, WA, at 3:17; and was pinned by Travis Mushero, MA, at 3:10.

Tom O’Meara, in the 152-pound weight class, finished 4-1 on the day and was third overall. O’Meara pinned Chris Glidden, MA, 0:37; pinned Isaiah Bagley, PCHS, at 4:33; was pinned by Justin Wing, Dex, at 1:06; pinned Brayden Flagg, Dex, at 1:51; and beat Bagley by default.

Seth Lister, in the 170 pound class, finished 2-2 on the day and was fourth. Lister pinned David Race, Dex, at 1:19; was pinned by Lucas Theriault, FK, at 3:17; pinned Gabe DuBois, FK, at 0:39; and lost by default to Tyler Avery, Mad. 

Kaden DeMerchant, 182 pounds, was 2-1 on the day and placed second. DeMerchant pinned Lance Webb, Mad, at 0:35; pinned Logan Perkins, Dex, no time listed; and was pinned by Jacob Nadeau, PCHS, at 3:18.

Jacob Smart, 220 pounds, finished 1-2. Smart was pinned by Aiden Nicholas, WA, at 0:58; pinned Nick Pelleitier, Car, at 0:09; and was pinned by Logan Cloutier, Mad, at 0:41.

Gunner Hatfield, 285 pounds, finished 1-2. Hatfield pinned Alex Race, Dex, at 1:33; was pinned by Colton Carlow, Dir, at 1:07; and was pinned by Michael Mcfarlane, Cal, at 0:51.
