CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou Mayor Mark Goughan awarded Councilor David Martin with an honorary clock on behalf of the city for his service as a councilor — a position he has held for more than a decade.
Elected in 2007, Martin’s term will end on Dec. 31. Martin also has served as the city’s mayor, in addition to his career as an educator at Caribou High School.
“The city of Caribou has had the privilege and honor of having Dave Martin serve the community,” said Goughan. He said he admires Martin’s philosophy, steadfastness and willingness to “fight for what he thinks will make this city a better place to live.”
“And it is to be commended,” Goughan continued, “because he hasn’t wavered one bit in the entire time I’ve known him. And that’s a good trait.”
He said these qualities are what make him a community figure who is admired and respected for his service to the city as a councilor and as an educator.
As a token of the city’s appreciation, City Manager Dennis Marker got Martin a clock in recognition of the time he has spent on the council.”
“Because he knew I probably wouldn’t show up for the meeting in January,” Martin joked.
They also presented Martin with a $100 gift certificate, and Goughan continued to reflect on the time they both spent on city council.
“We’ve had our differences pal,” he said, “we really have. And I can tell you right now, I admire the way you remain steadfast to your beliefs. It’s a true credit to our community to have people like you, and I want to thank you very much.”
